Terriers and Stars Improve to 3-0

Both the Yorkton Terriers and Battlefords North Stars remain undefeated following action Wednesday night.

In Yorkton, the Terriers welcomed the Weyburn Red Wings, who were also undefeated going into their first meeting of the season. The visitors would open the scoring as Jackson Haasman netted his first of the year for Weyburn, but it would be quickly answered by the Terriers JD Hall, who scored his 2nd of the season on the power-play with just 17 seconds remaining in the first to even the game. After a scoreless middle stanza, the Terriers would take their first lead of the night on the man advantage as Brett Butz banged home a loose rebound. Clay Sleeva would add an empty netter and the Terriers would earn a 3-1 win. For the 3rd straight game, Caleb Allen was rock solid in between the pipes for Yorkton, making 24 saves in the victory. Red Wings netminder Dazza Mitchell stopped 26 of 28 in the loss.

Meanwhile, in Battlefords the North Stars earned an impressive 6-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds. The North Stars were led by Steven Kesslering who netted a hat-trick in the win, while Captain Jake Southgate scored twice, and Keiton Klein added another. Netminder Josh Kotai was also superb for the home side in the win, stopping 40 of 41 in the victory to help the Stars improve to 3-0. Ryland Hueging had the lone goal for the Hounds in the loss.

Finally, in Nipawin, the Hawks bounced back at home as they doubled up the Estevan Bruins 6-3. The game was even at 3 going into the 3rd, but the hometown Hawks struck early and often in the final frame. Recently named SJHL MVP of the Week Bryden Kiesman continued his hot start to the year, netting his 3rd of the night on the power-play 1:36 into the 3rd to give Nipawin a 4-3 lead. Two minutes later Joel Mabin would double Nipawin’s lead, and the Hawks would cap off the scoring just 25 seconds later thanks to Francois-Xavier Bedard’s first of the season. The Hawks even their record at 2-2 with the win, while the Bruins drop to 1-3. Aleksa Babic scored twice, and Cody Davis netted his first of the season for the Bruins in the loss.
