PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Oct 1)

By Mike Stackhouse

CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Caleb Moretz, Flin Flon Bombers
1998 F Caleb Moretz (Fairbanks AK USA) ripped off 6-goals and 3-assists in 4-games played this past week as the Bombers won the last three in which he racked up offensive statistics.  Despite losing their final game of the Showcase to Yorkton, Moretz impressed with 2-goals and 2-assists.  Then, as part of a weekend sweep against Melville, Moretz had a hat trick in a 9-1 thrashing and then picked up another goal and assist in a 4-3 decision.  He’s up to 9-goals and 5-assists in 8-games on the year, good for second overall in league scoring.  Runner-up:  Daylan Marchi, Flin Flon.

IBAS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK:  Brendan Mark, Yorkton Terriers
1998 D Brendan Mark (Grand Rapids MN USA) is off to a fast start, offensively, and he continued his pace this past week with 5-assists in 4-games played.  The Yorkton captain is shouldering a burden of eating a ton of ice time and leading a blueline that lacks experience on a club that is trying to improve from 13-wins last year.  Mark got on the sheet with 2-assists in a loss at the Showcase to Nipawin and then he set up a goal in a win over Flin Flon one day later.  He also had two helpers against Notre Dame on Sunday and now has 9-assists overall in 7-games played.  He has 5-powerplay assists as he is also the catalyst for Yorkton with the man advantage.  Runner-up:  Chase Felgueiras, Humboldt.

SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK:  Pierce Diamond, Flin Flon Bombers
1998 G Pierce Diamond (Edmonton AB) picked on the Melville Millionaires this week as he got his feet wet with SJHL competition.  Diamond allowed just four goals in three starts against the Mils, all victories, on his way to posting a 1.33-GAA and .963-SPCT.  He shut them out at the Showcase and then allowed just one goal on Friday before getting solved for three on Saturday.  Overall, Diamond improves to 5-and-0 with a 2.60-GAA and .922-SPCT.  The Bombers are 0-and-3 in games Diamond hasn’t played.  Runner-up:  Riley Lamb, Weyburn.

SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:  Rayce Ramsay, Humboldt Broncos
2001 G Rayce Ramsay (Saskatoon SK) came back to the Broncos from the WHL just prior to the Showcase and got into games on Wednesday to close out the event, stopping 47-of-48 shots to lead the Broncos over Melville.  He got the call again on Saturday and turned away 39-of-40 against Kindersley to open his SJHL career with a 2-and-0 mark, 0.97-GAA, and .977-SPCT.  Runner-up:  Kyle Robinson, Notre Dame.
