STARS END LENGTHY TRIP WITH COMEBACK WIN

By Craig Stein

The Battlefords North Stars scored three goals in the last seven minutes of Sunday’s game in Yorkton to come from behind and beat the Terriers 5-3.

Trailing 3-2 in the last stages, Stars’ defenseman Cody Spagrud (1g-1a) scored with 6:59 on the clock to even things up, before MacGregor Sinclair gave them the lead just 2:36 later, and Matthias Urbanski added his 9th of the season, and remarkably his fifth during the four game road trip, scoring at least one goal in each of the four games.

Tre Doyon and Elijah Loon-Stewardson scored first period goals to put the North Stars up 2-0, but the Terriers (3-17-2-0) rattled off the next three, thanks to Cody Bruchkowski and Austin Wieler in the second period, and Mason Mullaney early in the third.

Joel Gryzbowski made 25/28 saves in his first action with the Stars (15-3-1-0) this season since he was re-assigned by the Saskatoon Blades.  Ben Laidlaw stopped 31/36 in goal for the Terriers.

The Stars, who’ve had a pile of games in hand on every team, return home from their busy southern swing for a home game against Kindersley in one of three games on Tuesday night.

The North Stars dropped the first game of their four games in five nights road trip back on Wednesday in Notre Dame, but stormed back to win three games in three nights over the weekend, and that included another 5-3 win Saturday in Weyburn.

Urbanski had two goals in that one while Layne Young had a goal and two assists and Kolby Matthews made 34/37 saves.

Also Saturday, Notre Dame double up Melville 4-2.  Chance Longjohn had points on every goal, scoring once and setting up three, while Chaz Smedsrud added 1g-2a and Jack Ryan made 30 stops.

Arthur Miller scored a pair of goals and Maxim Sidelnik made 37/40 saves as the Estevan Bruins doubled Humboldt 6-3.  Defenseman Stephen Wack scored twice for the Broncos.

Loch Morrison and Tyson Meyers each had a goal and an assist leading Melfort past the La Ronge Ice Wolves 4-1.  Morrison, a defenseman, now has 23-points in 21 games (10g-13a).
