Childerhose Named Dwight McMillan Award Winner

By SJHL

Flin Flon Bomber Assistant Coach Garry Childerhose has been named the Dwight McMillan Award winner, which goes to the top SJHL assistant coach as voted on by his peers.

Childerhose, who just finished up his third season working under the wing of veteran Coach/General Manager Mike Reagan, is honored and humbled to be recognized.  “It’s really exciting for me to be recognized in this way.  I enjoy working with the players 1 on 1 before and after practices as well as games.  We do a lot of video work going over the game’s highlights and analyzing where we can improve.  The video systems that are available to coaches now make the job a lot easier for sure.  When you are discussing scenarios with players, I often think that I wished we had this much available when I played.  You can pinpoint and mark all saves and shots and also sort through things like every player’s shift so they can look and see after each game.  It’s become a passion of mine to work close with each player this way,” said Childerhose.

Childerhose may have a future as a head coach.  For the last two seasons when Reagan has been working with Canada West at the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge; Childerhose assumed the temporary role as a fill-in and went 7-and-0 in 2015-16 and then followed that up with a 6-and-1 record in 2016-17.  “A lot of credit goes to Mike for letting me develop.  He put a lot of trust in me to lead the team in his absence and I really appreciate that.  It’s been huge for my development.”

“Eventually, I’d like to look at getting a head coach position, but I’m at a good place right now where I’m enjoying being on the ice and working with skill development.  I like working with the players and the community and organization are a great fit for me.  It’s like a big family from the board members to the staff to the trainers.   The tight fit atmosphere trickles down to the players and they can see how we are and the boys become a family too.  Flin Flon is such a hockey town.  Everything there is about the Bombers and I love it.”

Childerhose played with the Melfort Mustangs from 2007-09 and then attended Geneseo (NCAA Div III) for four years after that before landing in Flin Flon and back with the SJHL.  He’s slated to return to the Bombers and be on-site preparing for the upcoming season in August.
