14 CJHLERS, 30 ALUMNI, AMONG THOSE TABBED
CALGARY, Alta. (October 15, 2016) – When National Hockey League Central Scouting announced their preliminary players to watch list earlier this month, as a prelude to the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago, Ill., a solid portion of current Canadian Junior Hockey League skaters as well as a plethora of CJHL alumni were among those tabbed.
Among the group on the initial NHLCS list that have played at least one regular season game in the CJHL are 14 current players along with 30 alumni.
The prospects were ranked under the following criteria:
A Rating – Indicates a potential 1st round draft choice
B Rating – Indicates a potential 2nd or 3rd round draft choice
C Rating – Indicates a potential 4th, 5th or 6th round choice
The top two rated current CJHLers earning a berth on the initial watch list is a pair of Alberta Junior Hockey League defencemen in Cale Makar (Brooks Bandits) and Ian Mitchell (Spruce Grove Saints). Both blueliners earned ‘B’ ratings. Each of the other 12 CJHL skaters all garnered ‘C’ ratings.
Meanwhile two CJHL alumni are among the group that had ‘A’ ratings. They are former Penticton Vees (BCHL) forward Michael Rasmussen along with ex-Toronto Jr. Canadiens (OJHL) forward Owen Tippett.
Alex Formenton (F, Aurora Tigers – OJHL); Greg Meirles (F, Ottawa Jr. Senators – CCHL), Markus Phillips (D, Newmarket Hurricanes); Robert Proner (D, Oakville Blades – OJHL); Jarrett Tyska (D, Chilliwack Chiefs – BCHL) and Lane Zablocki (F, Sherwood Park Crudasers – AJHL) were the six league alums that were slotted in the ‘B’ rating group.
The NHL Central Scouting players to watch list is formed from the top prospects from all the major development leagues throughout North America and Europe and is updated throughout the season as scouts travel to see the players live.
