A top-level university for the leagues’ leading goaltender.
Broncos’ netminder, Rayce Ramsay, has announced his commitment to the University of Toronto and will become a member of the Varsity Blues for the 2022/23 season.
Ramsay’s milestone marks the fourth Bronco this season to announce a commitment and lock down their post-secondary destination.
“I am extremely excited to have committed to the University of Toronto,” said Ramsay. “To get the opportunity to receive one of the highest qualities of education, while competing at a high level of hockey is something that I’m very grateful for.”
Ramsay has been having a record-breaking season with the Broncos in his final year of junior hockey. He currently posts a record of 32-9-0-0 and leads the SJHL in wins, minutes played, shots against, and saves, while his 2.19 GAA and .925 SV% are both second among goaltenders.
His 32 wins broke the SJHL single-season record for a goaltender since the SJHL switched to a 58-game season. It also marked the most wins in the SJHL in the past 20 years, since the 2001/02 campaign.
“I think the biggest thing for me is that I take pride in everything that I do. Whether it’s hockey, school, work, or anything else, I believe that if you put the maximum effort forward into everything you do, you will live a better life and get rewarded along the way,” said Ramsay.
Ramsay was a member of the Humboldt Broncos as a 17-year-old rookie in 2018/19. He then made the jump to the WHL where he spent the last two seasons with the Kamloops Blazers before returning to Humboldt for his final year of junior.
He receives constant praise from his coaching staff and teammates for the work ethic that he embodies both on and off the ice, which has translated to his success throughout his career.
“Rayce’s commitment to U of T is incredible. It’s a credit to the immense amount of work he puts in. Everyone can see what he does on the ice, but his commitment off the ice is second to none,” said Head Coach and GM Scott Barney. “He’s been a prime example of what it means to be a Bronco, and it’s been great for our young players to learn from him and see that level of dedication. U of T is one of the most prestigious universities in North America. We’re very happy for Rayce to get the opportunity to play there, as well as continue his academics.”
The admiration is clearly mutual. If he was heading back to Junior-A for his final season, Ramsay had no doubt it would be while wearing the green and gold in Humboldt.
“Playing for the Broncos has been such a positive experience for me. The organization has given me nothing but opportunities to better myself as both a goalie and a person, and that has ultimately led to where I am today. I owe a lot of credit to Barns (Head Coach, Scott Barney) and the rest of the team for my university commitment. Our goal remains to win a championship this year, and I’m looking forward to continuing that pursuit wearing the green and gold, then of course the years ahead as a member of the Varsity Blues.”
The University of Toronto was ranked the #1 school in Canada by McLean’s magazine in 2021 and is consistently recognized as one of the top schools in the world.
The Varsity Blues compete in U Sports of the Ontario University Athletic Conference.
