SGEU MVP of the Month: Josh Knittig, Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars were the hottest team in the SJHL (1a, 1b with Flin Flon at least) for most of January, and the veteran Knittig on the left of top centreman Anthony Campbell and a revolving door of right wingers was as good a unit as any in the league. Knittig’s power and straight-ahead style make space for the crafty Campbell, and his shot and finishing ability do the rest. It’s a match made in heaven, and Coach Logan has not ventured away from it very much this season.

Month Stats: 12 GP – 10 G, 10 A – 20 PTS

Bourgault Forward of the Month: William Leonard, Yorkton Terriers

After Estevan’s Ewan Rennie, the next top 3 scorers in the league are Yorkton’s top line, and of that group, the 19-year-old native of Drummondville, Leonard, is undoubtedly the purest finisher. Leonard goes hard to the net and scores in a variety of ways, and his hard-nosed style matches perfectly with the more finesse-first pair he’s with every night. The Terriers ended the month on fire, but Leonard has been incredibly consistent throughout, posting five and four-point nights to kick off 2026. With Jye Zawatsky and Gabrielle Courschesne, this line has been a nightmare for opponents all season long.

Month Stats: 11 GP – 8 G, 11 A – 19 PTS

SuperU Defenceman of the Month: Xavier Fauchon, Flin Flon Bombers

Fauchon’s season started strong, then tailed off a bit, but, like the Bombers as a team, has been almost unstoppable since the calendar turned to 2026. It is possible to draw a line between Fauchon’s resurgence and the club’s acquisition of the rugged and dependable Ryder Knutson from Humboldt, who has been the veteran Quebecer’s partner most of the time. The consistent month for Fauchon was highlighted by a three-point night, and all of Flin Flon’s defence corps has been awesome lately.

Month Stats: 11 GP – 2 G, 10 A – 12 PTS

SaskTel Goalie of the Month: Kaeden Serpa, Battlefords North Stars

While January started brilliantly and didn’t end as well for the Stars, Serpa was strong throughout, and any sort of team hiccup would be extremely tough to peg on the 20-year-old netminder. His strongest win in the month likely was a 41-save effort to beat Melfort back on Jan. 10, and he has given up two goals or fewer in four of his last six appearances.

Month Stats: 6-1-0-1 – 3.18 GAA, .919 SV%

SaskMilk Rookie of the Month: Finn Werner, Flin Flon Bombers

Mike Reagan’s move to bring in 20-year-old Charlie Tritt from Humboldt at the trade deadline means he now likely has the best veteran and the best rookie goaltender in the league. The youngster Werner has hardly put a foot wrong since coming to the league in November from Everett in the WHL, and has recorded shutouts in three of his last five starts. Finn would likely be the first to admit his team is playing outstanding in front of him, but you can only stop the shots you get. It’s often not so easy to have great numbers as a goaltender when you don’t average a ton of rubber a night, and Finn’s are impeccable.

Month Stats: 5-0-0-0 – 1.20 GAA, .954 SV%, 3 shutouts

Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Month: Jye Zawatsky, Yorkton Terriers (from Yorkton, Sask)

Jye could easily have been the MVP of the month, especially had he not been away playing very well at the Viking Cup to start January, and is creeping up the scoring leaders chart. His dominant January, which included four nights with three points or more, has been a catalyst for Yorkton’s charge into a Round 1 home-ice advantage spot at the time of this writing. For a league many who never watch it claim is for grinders with low skill, Yorkton’s top line, with Zawatsky a big key, demonstrates nightly how ridiculous that myth is.

Month Stats: 9 GP – 5 G, 12 A – 17 PTS
