The Melfort Mustangs are very proud to announce that 2002-born forward Dawson Leroux has committed to the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (ACAC) for the 2023/2024 season.
“I am super excited to start a new chapter in Red Deer,” Leroux said. “They’ve got a top notch hockey program and I’m looking forward to joining a team who is fresh off a championship!”
Leroux, a Lethbridge, Alta. product, joined the Mustangs prior to the 2021/2022 season. As a 20-year-old this season, Leroux played in 54 of a possible 56 games, scoring 22 times and adding 32 assists. His 22 goals were good for second on the team, and his 54 points were good for second on the team. He was also tied for 14th in SJHL scoring. In 10 playoff games, Leroux added two goals and two assists, including the overtime winner in Game Five against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
During the 2021/2022 season, Leroux played in all 58 games, scoring 17 goals and adding 26 assists for 43 points. He was fifth on the Mustangs in points that season. In the seven game playoff series against Yorkton that year, Leroux pitched in four assists, tied for the most assists during that run on the team.
Leroux missed a grand total of two games during his SJHL tenure.
Prior to his time in Melfort, Leroux played parts of three seasons in the AJHL with the Olds Grizzly’s. In 68 career regular season games, Leroux scored eight goals and added nine assists. He played in five playoff games as well, scoring once.
The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings are defending Alberta College Athletic Association Champions and Leroux joins Kevin Minnoch as another 2023 Mustangs graduate heading to Red Deer. Former Mustang Nolan Doell was on the Kings this season.
