NEW LEADER IN THE SHERWOOD

HAWKS FINISH ROAD TRIP ON A HIGH

While it’s far too early to be looking too close at the standings, it’s still remarkable how the Nipawin Hawks have turned a slow start to the season completely around so soon, and after a 2-1-0 road trip over the weekend, now find themselves alone in first place in the Sherwood Division.

The Hawks (8-3-2-0) won 3-1 in Notre Dame in Sunday’s lone SJHL contest.  Keegan Kjargaard scored his team-leading 8th of the season and added one assist.  Tanner Thompson (1g-1a) and Keillan Olson also scored, and Sam-Jaxon Visscher made 30/31 saves in the win.  Chance Longjohn broke Visscher’s shutout with just 36 seconds left in the third period, and Jordan Greenfield-Flemon made 20/23 saves, suffering his first regulation loss since coming to the Hounds (7-6-0-1).

Nipawin started the season winless in their first four games (0-2-2) while scoring just five goals.  Since then, they won their next six, and have now won eight of their last nine, and have leapfrogged Flin Flon into top spot.

The Hawks will have to wait until Saturday when they host Weyburn to go for their third straight win, while the Hounds welcome Humboldt on Tuesday.
