OPENING NIGHT RECAP: Broncos spoil the Wolverines’ party

WARMAN, SK – Game 1 of the 2025-26 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League campaign for all 12 teams, and in the history of the Warman Wolverines, is in the books.

A raucous crowd of 1,345 at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex was on hand to witness the opening chapter of the Wolverines’ Friday night game, but it was the visiting Humboldt Broncos who had the last laugh.

Jacob Strizzi cashed a pair, including one into the empty net, and Rolan Amin had the winner bounce in off his chest 4:55 into the contest, as Charlie Tritt notched a 30-save shutout in Humboldt’s 3-0 win. Griffin Wright was brilliant in making 37 stops in defeat for Warman.

In Flin Flon, the Bombers got goals from nine different scorers and outlasted the visiting La Ronge Ice Wolves 9-4 at the Whitney Forum. New arrival Xavier Fauchon led the way with a goal and two assists for the Maroon, while Dawson Butler counted a pair of goals for the Ice Wolves.

Jackson Lee’s winner followed Boston Harkness’ second and game-tying goal less than a minute apart in the third period as the Melville Millionaires took a wild 5-3 victory over the Estevan Bruins at the CN Community Centre. Melville captain Harkness’ three-point night was a career high.

The defending champion Melfort Mustangs could not hold a one-goal third-period lead, when Konnor Watson’s second of the night and Mason Lowther’s first were enough to lift the Nipawin Hawks to a 4-3 triumph at the Northern Lights Palace. Gage Roberts made 31 saves in the win.

Callas Pierce scored two third-period markers, and Roan Burgess scored the winner in the shootout en route to a dramatic 5-4 victory for the Weyburn Red Wings over the Yorkton Terriers at the newly renamed Whitecap Resources Centre. Luke Dekay also tallied for Weyburn in the skills competition, as did Gabriel Courchesne, who added two goals in regulation as well.

Finally, in North Battleford, it was their rivals, the Kindersley Klippers, who prevailed, with four second-period goals proving enough to earn Kyle Schneider his first win as an SJHL head coach by the score of 5-2.
