REGINA, SK – Zac Somers scored his second goal in the second game in a row, and Kristian Coombs recorded his first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff shutout as the Melfort Mustangs took a 2-0 series lead with a 3-0 win over the Yorkton Terriers Saturday.
The Mustangs outscored the Terriers 9-1, held their vaunted power play to a 0-for-9 mark over the first two contests of the series, and improved to 5-0 at home overall in the post-season.
At the Northern Lights Palace these playoffs, the league’s No. 1 seed has outscored the opposition 25-6.
Meanwhile, in Flin Flon, it was all Weyburn as the Red Wings stunned the home crowd with a dominating 4-1 victory to take an impressive road 2-0 series lead.
Liam Fitzgerald notched his fourth and fifth goals of the post-season, while Angelo Zol was brilliant once again in the Wings’ net while stopping 31 pucks.
Including the regular season, the Wings improved to 4-0 at the Whitney Forum and have won five of the six meetings between them and the Bombers this campaign.
Flin Flon was outshot 38-32 by Weyburn in the game, marking the first time the Bombers were outshot at the Whitney Forum since all the way back to March 22, 2024, or Game 1 of last year’s post-season.
The scene now shifts to the home of the lower seeds.
