REGINA, SK – Drew Williamson broke a 1-1 tie by way of a one-timer off the rush on a North Stars power play as Battlefords upended the Nipawin Hawks 4-1 Saturday.
Finlay Klippenstein and Linken Fisher both counted multi-point nights in the win, while Raydr Wallington had the lone response from Nipawin.
In Yorkton, the Terriers showed no signs of a hangover from their run to the final as they opened up their campaign with a 6-2 victory over their Bunge Division rival Estevan Bruins.
Austin Horbachewsky’s shorthanded marker at the 4:21 mark of the second period stood up as the winner, and he proved the game-high scorer with a pair of goals and a helper on the night.
Five different Terriers had multi-point nights, while the Bruins, who also opened their season, pulled within one a minute into the third period, but could not overcome the deficit.
In a battle of early-season league scoring leaders, it was Everett Merchant’s La Ronge Ice Wolves who outlasted Dru Mushumanski’s Melfort Mustangs by way of a 5-2 victory at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.
Both players had multi-point outings, while Knox Bendera’s second-period tally proved the winner.
A night after Melville spoiled Weyburn’s home opener, the Red Wings returned the favour as Ethan Berard’s 28 stops were enough to help the visitors down the Millionaires 4-1.
Trennen Redlick had his second straight night with a goal and an assist in the victory, while Hayden Iron Shirt was credited with the game-winner in the second period.
Finally in Humboldt, it was the Wolverines who returned the home-opener spoiling favour by way of a 36-save effort from Luke Brunen, and multi-point nights from Ethan Dundas, and recently acquired defencemen Jordan Blanchette and Theron Bensler.
