SJHL alums to attend NHL Development Camps

REGINA, SK – Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League alumni Josh Kotai, Austin Elliott, Matthew Perkins, and Nolan Renwick will be attending National Hockey League Development Camps this summer.

Elliott, 21, posted an 18-12-4 record and a 3.44 save percentage as a 17-year-old goaltender for the Notre Dame Hounds in the 2021-22 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League campaign. He is coming off a Memorial Cup championship as a member of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

He will be attending the Dallas Stars Development Camp from June 30 to July 3 in Frisco, Texas. It is his third NHL development camp, following his attendance with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators a year ago. He plans to attend the University of Massachusetts at Lowell of NCAA Division I in the fall.

Perkins, 21, of Balgonie, SK, posted 63 points in 68 games for the 2021-22 Humboldt Broncos, and was drafted the 4th round, 119th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2023 NHL Draft. He will be attending Canucks camp at the University of British Columbia June 30 to July 3 fresh off his sophomore year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Perkins has transferred to Northeastern University for the upcoming NCAA Division I season.

Kotai, 22, was the SJHL SaskTel Goaltender of the Year in 2022-23 with the Canterra Seeds Cup champion and Centennial Cup silver medal-winning Battlefords North Stars. He was 32-4-3 with a .935 save percentage that campaign, and earned a .939 save percentage in six games at the National Championship tournament in Portage, MB.

This past campaign, Kotai was 17-10-3 with a 1.92 goals-against-average, and a .936 save percentage, and was a finalist for the NCAA Division I’s top goaltender award as a member of Augstana University.

Renwick, 24, of Milestone, SK, will join Kotai at Pittsburgh Penguins camp July 3-7 in Cranberry, PA. The big forward posted 27 points in 42 games for the Notre Dame Hounds in the 2018-19 SJHL campaign, and played his professional games this past year with the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He joined them after winning the NCAA National Championship with the University of Maine, where he spent four years.

Renwick also won the Telus Cup with the 2018 Notre Dame Hounds U18s.

One-time Melfort Mustangs draft pick Alex Worthington was invited to Winnipeg Jets camp, while Notre Dame Hounds’ draft pick Hudson Malinoski is headed to Toronto Maple Leafs camp.

SJHL staff will be monitoring the NHL Development Camp rosters as they come out.
