SGEU MVP of the Week: Callas Pierce, Weyburn Red Wings
Callas was expected to be a premium player from the start, but it took a bit to get going. Well, he’s going now. Seven points in his last four, including two two-goal games this past week, have the Wings top-line left winger in a well-deserved MVP spot.
Week Stats: 4GP – 6G, 1A – 7 PTS, 3-pt night @ La Ronge
SaskLotteries Forward of the Week: Mason Lowther, Nipawin Hawks
If September didn’t agree with Lowther, October has been a totally new day. No points, albeit in a very small sample size, in the league’s first month has been followed by eight in five games since the calendar turned. Seven of those eight came in the last three, with the 2007-born power forward filling some of that void left by the departed Konnor Watson. Of his five goals, two came on the power play, and one was a game-winner, so Lowther has been Mr. Clutch for the Hawks lately.
Week Stats: 3GP – 4G, 3A – 7 PTS, 3 multi-point nights in a row
SuperU Defenceman of the Week: Jaxson Doyle, Weyburn Red Wings
Doyle’s growth as an offensive producer has been steady without compromising his defensive game, and with him and fellow veterans like Jonah Bierd and Teagan Semchyshen patrolling Weyburn’s backend, it’s no wonder the Wings are off to a red-hot start. The 6-foot-2 Albertan has scored in each of his last three games after scoring six all of last season, and he’s been at or near the top of the league’s plus-minus leaders all year. Of those points, zero have come on the power play, which says more about how deadly Weyburn’s man advantage is than what head coach Cody Mapes thinks of Doyle.
Week Stats: 4GP – 3G, 3A – 6 PTS, 3-game point streak
SaskTel Goalie of the Week: Finn Werner, Flin Flon Bombers
Werner had enormous shoes to fill as Flin Flon’s No. 1 after the departure of the graduated Charlie Tritt, though nobody doubted the 2008-born puck stopper would have any trouble after his monster rookie season a year ago. Werner leads the league among starters in goals-against average, save percentage, wins, and shutouts, so there is no real way he could possibly have played better so far this year. He was excellent again this past weekend against Estevan.
Week Stats: 2GP, 2-0-0, 1.50 GAA, .945 SV%, SO vs. Estevan
SaskMilk Rookie of the Week: Carson Park, Nipawin Hawks
Despite playing two or three fewer games than many on the rookie board, the 2009-born Brandon Wheat Kings prospect has dominated for another black and gold team. His line with Jack Janzen and Mason Lowther have been almost unstoppable since they were put together, and with three multi-point games in a row, Park doesn’t look like he’s slowing down. Is there a bigger lock for the 2026 Western All-Star Challenge coming up in November?
Week Stats: 3GP – 0G, 8A – 8 PTS, 4 multi-point nights out of 7 total games
Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Week: Ryan Gibbs, Weyburn Red Wings (from Moose Jaw, Sask)
If there is a bigger lock, it might be Weyburn’s top-line centreman Gibbs, whose point-producing acumen is already as polished as anybody in the SJHL. He had multi-point nights in both La Ronge games this weekend and has been a big reason the Wings are the league’s hottest team right now. Mapes was hoping to get Gibbs into the fold for a couple of years now, but that patience is finally paying off.
Week Stats: 4GP – 1G, 5A – 6PTS, 2 multi-point nights @ La Ronge
