The search is over, and the answer is a familiar face to the local rink.

The Battlefords North Stars announced Tuesday, the club has hired local, Garry Childerhose as an assistant coach with the team.

No stranger to the junior hockey ranks in the province, Childerhose spent five seasons as an assistant coach on the Flin Flon Bombers’ staff from the fall of 2014, to spring 2019. Named head coach of the Kindersley Klippers in April 2020, Childerhose took a leave of absence from the position prior to the start of the season, to tend to health concerns.

In a tweet posted to social media, Childerhose said he’s looking forward to the opportunity ahead to join the hometown team.

North Stars head coach and general manager, Brayden Klimosko said Childerhose’s experience in the league and ties to the community, made him an ideal fit for the assistant coach position.

“Obviously his experience speaks for itself and it’s a nice fit too that he’s living here in town and that’s always exciting,” Klimosko said. “We kind of came up at the same time as assistant coaches – he in Flin Flon, myself in Humboldt – and now getting to work with him it’s pretty exciting.”

“He has a lot of connections with different programs too, having had 17 players committed to Division 1 teams [over his tenure in Flin Flon], which is always exciting to add an asset like that to the community,” the coach added.

Prior to his coaching career, Childerhose played three seasons in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) with the Melfort Mustangs, registering 32 goals and 92 points in 131 career games.
