Melfort Mustang defenceman Leith Olafson has taken a bit of a different path to Melfort and the SJHL.

The 2003-born blueliner out of Wasa, B.C. started as a 16-year old playing in the KIJHL with the Kimberley Dynamiters in 2019/2020, tallying seven assists in 33 games that season and adding two more assists in four playoff games.

During the COVID-19 shortened season, Olafson committed to the Mustangs after spending a bit of time at BCHL camps.

Since the puck dropped in Melfort, Olafson has exceeded expectation at every turn, scoring two goals and adding eight assists in 27 games. His first SJHL goal came in a two goal games on Dec. 4 against Melville.

Listed at 6’1”, 190 lbs, Olafson has not only produced offensively, but his competitiveness and his physical play has made him a major piece on the Mustang blue line this year, and his role will continue to grow.
