By Shannon Doka, SaskEnergy

Release Date March 17, 2017   Today we are excited to announce that the winner of the 2016-17 KidSport Cup is the Battlefords North Stars, who had a league leading 102 goals at the time the 1,000 goal target was reached.  This is the second season in a row that the North Stars have been crowned the KidSport Cup Champions.  The presentation of the KidSport Cup will occur at tonight’s quarter final opener at the North Battleford Civic Centre.

Goals for KidSport is a collaboration between SaskEnergy Network Members (independent retailers and contractors), KidSport Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).  The program raises funds in communities across the province to help kids access sport opportunities by reducing the financial pressure that some may face.  For every home goal scored by an SJHL team (up to 1,000) during the regular season, $20 per goal is donated to local KidSport Chapters.

“This has been my first season with the Goals for KidSport Program and it has been very exciting to see the excitement in each of the communities, and the dollars raised staying in the communities who raise it!” said Carolyn Ganes, a KidSport Community Consultant.

On February 20, 2017 the 1,000th goal was scored by the Humboldt Broncos’ Logan Schatz which guaranteed $20,000 for KidSport Chapters across the province.

“The league is extremely proud to partner with SaskEnergy Network Members in raising funds and awareness for KidSport!” said Bill Chow, President of the SJHL.  “This is another way our league gives back to the communities where we play.”

In addition, eleven sponsored game nights saw SaskEnergy Network Members provide an additional $20 per home goal to the overall grand total. These included Quality Plumbing & Heating (Weyburn), Yorkton Plumbing & Heating (Yorkton), River City Plumbing & Heating (Battlefords), Aquarius Plumbing & Heating (Notre Dame), Johnson Plumbing & Heating (Estevan), and Abben Heating & Plumbing (La Ronge).

Also, four SaskEnergy Network Members committed to $5 per home goal for the entire season. Thank you to Economy Plumbing & Heating (Melville), Main Plumbing & Heating (Melfort), Goodheart Plumbing, Heating, & Electrical (Kindersley), and J.T. Plumbing & Heating (Nipawin) for their extra incentive to their local SJHL teams.

Thanks to these individual contributions from local member companies, an additional $2,215 was raised, bringing the end of season dollars raised for KidSport to $22,215 for the 2016-17 season with more to come as the raffle and chuck a puck promotions are now be tallied.

“SaskEnergy Network Members are local plumbing and heating contractors based in communities across Saskatchewan.  On behalf of SaskEnergy Network Members I would like to thank all the teams and their fans who have supported this initiative.  We are pleased to support the very dedicated KidSport volunteers raising funds in SJHL supported communities and we are proud to have participated and been part of those fundraising efforts!” said Erin Wallington, owner of SaskEnergy Network Member Main Plumbing and Heating in Melfort.

In three seasons more than $75,000 has been raised for local KidSport chapters across the province.  Goals for KidSport is dedicated to helping the people of Saskatchewan, and to making sure that all kids can play!
