CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Layne Young, Battlefords North Stars
1997 F Layne Young (Frenchman Butte SK) helped lead the Battlefords North Stars to a 2-0 series lead in their quarter-final matchup with Weyburn by contributing a goal and four assists in the two home games over the weekend. Young had three assists on Friday in a 4-3 decision and then a goal and a helper in an 8-3 win in game two. Young put up 27-goals and 44-assists in 53-games during the regular season. Runner up: Ben Allen, Battlefords.
IBAS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK: Eric Sinclair, Flin Flon Bombers
1996 D Eric Sinclair (Kenora ON) got his playoff season off on the right foot with a goal and two assists in game one against Notre Dame on Friday night. He added another assists in game two and goes into game three having played 25 SJHL playoff games in his career. Sinclair had 17-goals and 34-assists in 46-games during the regular season. Runner up: Connor Sych, Battlefords.
SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: Kristian Stead, Nipawin Hawks
1996 G Kristian Stead (Merrit BC) won back to back games over the weekend to give the Hawks a 2-0 series edge over the Humboldt Broncos in the quarterfinals. Stead turned away 62-of-64 shots as the Hawks won game one at home and then game two on the road. He is expected to be a big barrier to any team looking to knock off the Hawks in the playoffs as he only figures to improve upon an already stellar regular season in which he posted a 29-and-12 record, 7-shutouts, and a 1.97-GAA to go along wih a .936-SPCT. Runner up: Nathan Alalouf, Estevan.
SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Chaz Smedsrud, Notre Dame Hounds
1998 F Chaz Smedsrud (Luverne MN) carried over his red hot second of the regular season into the playoffs as he picked up a goal and three assists in four games last week, helping the Hounds eliminate the Melfort Mustangs in the wildcard round and then he contributed an assist in a game two loss against Flin Flon in the quarter-finals. Smedsrud had 15-goals and 18-assists in 45-games this season, including 25-points in his final 22-games. Runner up: Josh McDougall, Nipawin.
