Millionaires, Bruins Return With Wins

By Craig Stein

VITERRA TEAMS BACK AT IT

The Melville Millionaires went into Yorkton and doubled up the Terriers 4-2 to open up their annual New Years’ home-and-home.

The bulk of the damage was done by the line of Josh Borynec, Damian Bentz and Luke Spadafora.  The trio combined for three goals and 10 points.  Borynec scored three times, while Bentz assisted on all four Millionaire goals, and Spadafora set up three.  Daniel Liberty also scored and Colby Entz made 30/32 saves for the Millionaires (12-19-2-2).

Chantz Petruic opened the scoring with his 20th goal of the season for the Terriers (20-13-1-0).

The Estevan Bruins out-shot the Weyburn Red Wings 16-3 in the first period, 20-6 in the second, and 48-23 on the night, beating the Wings 5-3.

Five different Bruins found the net, as defenseman Jake Heerspink had a goal and two assists.  Michael McChesney and Bryce Platt each had a goal and an assist, while Tyson Manz and Turner Ripplinger also scored for the Bruins (17-18-2-1).

Seas Olson (1g-1a), Tyran Brown and Eric Soar replied for the Red Wings.  Cody Levesque made 43/47 saves.

Melville’s win and Weyburn’s loss on Sunday afternoon leaves the Wings five points shy of the Millionaires for the 10th and final playoff spot.  Estevan’s win coupled with Yorkton’s loss also gets the Bruins to within four points of the Terriers for the Viterra Division lead.  The Terriers do have four games in hand, but did see leading scorer Jared Legien join the WHL’s Vancouver Giants over the Christmas break.  Legien had a goal and two assists in his Giants’ debut in Red Deer on Friday night.
