MELVILLE, SK – Kristian Coombs stopped 43 shots, and the Melfort Mustangs clinched first overall in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings with the point they earned from tonight’s 2-1 shootout defeat in Flin Flon.
Carter Cormier scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Bombers the win, but it was not enough to prevent Melfort from earning home-ice advantage throughout the post-season. It also meant that the Mustangs claimed the Viterra Division title.
On the other end of the playoff picture, Russ Demo scored on a breakaway in overtime as the Kindersley Klippers grabbed two massive points via a 3-2 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
The victory moved the No. 8 seeded Klippers three points ahead of the No. 9 seed Wolves for the final post-season spot with five games remaining for both clubs.
Elsewhere in Melville, the Millionaires won their 11th straight game, downing the Humboldt Broncos 3-2 in a shootout.
The Mils scored on all three of their shots in the skills competition, closing the gap on idle Yorkton for fourth place to two points.
Finally in North Battleford, the North Stars clinched their playoff spot with a 6-3 victory over the Estevan Bruins. Anthony Campbell led the way with his first career SJHL hat trick and posted five goals overall in the two-game set with the Bruins at the Access Communications Centre.
Only two more spots are yet to be clinched in the post-season picture.
