SGEU MVP of the Week: Noah Kraus, Melville Millionaires
Kraus had big skates to fill after Matthew Spencer-Dahl’s graduation, but he has done that so far and perhaps more. The Mils beat two very good teams, Flin Flon and Humboldt, at home this past week, and Kraus deserves a ton of credit. The Toronto native has recorded a wildly impressive .938 save percentage-plus in four of five appearances so far.
Week Stats: 2GP, 2-0-0, 1.50 GAA, .962 SV%
SaskLotteries Forward of the Week: Jack Janzen, Nipawin Hawks
Jack’s development as an offensive producer on top of being a shutdown centreman has been steady over his SJHL career, and it appears he has taken that last step to an elite Top 6 forward. Janzen’s three- and two-point nights this past week keyed the Hawks to their first couple of wins of the year, and that offence, paired with his typical defensive acumen, means Jack should be considered one of the league’s premium centremen.
Week Stats: 3GP – 3G, 2A – 5 PTS, 58.3% on faceoffs
SuperU Defenceman of the Week: Dylan McCann, Kindersley Klippers
After two years in the Manitoba League, McCann looks like he’s really found his home in Kindersley. A big, physical presence first and foremost, his opportunities to play power play and take on a bigger role have translated into a few more points, and he looks like a great fit on the Klips back end. Two two-point games, including in a big Canalta Hotels Friday Night Spotlight win over the Kindersley Klippers, mean he is a well-deserved Defenceman of the Week.
Week Stats: 2GP – 1G, 3A – 4 PTS, 24:21 mins/game
SaskTel Goalie of the Week: Brady Holtvogt, Humboldt Broncos
A couple of questions came up about how Holtvogt would play immediately after his time in a holding pattern, waiting to see which direction his WHL career would go…but he’s answered that question as impressively as he could have. He has two wins in three games so far, all with save percentages over .920, and has allowed only five goals on 106 shots. Given the return of Holtvogt, and the three talents arrived from Flin Flon in that big trade, on top of the core Brayden Klimosko has already assembled, the expectations for the Broncos are and should be as high as they have been for many years.
Week Stats: 3GP, 2-1-0, 1.68 GAA, .953 SV%
SaskMilk Rookie of the Week: Austin Mori-Goodman, Nipawin Hawks
Mori-Goodman has been enormous, both literally at 6-foot-4, but also in terms of providing timely offence as the Hawks’ vets have taken their time getting going this year. The 18-year-old from Sylvan Lake, AB, had points in all three games this week, including two multi-point games, and he has points in all but one of Nipawin’s contests so far.
Week Stats: 3GP – 2G, 3A – 5 PTS, two multi-point nights
Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Week: Alex Morrison, Yorkton Terriers (from Saltcoats, Sask)
The veteran Morrison has made the rare move from one side of the Parkland rivalry to the other with ease, producing at a new offensive level in Yorkton while keeping his bulldog-like intensity and effort. He scored two goals and added an assist Saturday in an impressive win over Flin Flon, and then added a couple more points and a fight in Sunday’s wild loss to Weyburn.
Week Stats: 2GP – 3G, 2A – 5PTS, Georgie Howe Hat-Trick vs. Weyburn
