REGINA, SK – Noel Englot’s first as a Mustang at the 13:48 mark of the third period held up as the winner as Melfort edged the Battlefords North Stars 4-3 Tuesday.
The Mustangs are now unbeaten in six, with five wins and an overtime loss, and snapped Battlefords’ run of 11 games without a regulation defeat.
With the victory, Melfort moved within five points of idle Melville for the eighth and final playoff spot.
In Nipawin, the Hawks and Flin Flon Bombers combined for eight goals in the first period before the Manitoba-based squad surged ahead with three more special-teams markers to take the contest 7-4.
Flin Flon has now won 11 in a row and moved four points ahead of Battlefords in first place by virtue of the North Stars’ loss.
Joey Lies notched his second hat trick of the year and became the seventh SJHLer to hit the 20-goal plateau this campaign.
Finally, in Kindersley, Mattias Radke stopped all 23 shots he faced for his first career SJHL shutout to lift the Klippers to a 1-0 victory over the Humboldt Broncos.
Wil Christian’s power play marker at 3:44 of the third period was the only goal of the game.
The Klippers moved two points ahead of the final playoff spot with the win, although 42 games they have played the most out of any team in the league.
