Terriers ready to compete once again
Year after year, questions follow the Terriers into the season.
Yet under Head Coach and General Manager Emery Olauson, the answer has remained remarkably consistent: a team that finds a way to compete and entertain.
Granted, last year’s dramatic run to the final, which saw them win as epic a semifinal against Battlefords as this author has seen in the SJHL, will be a tough one to follow.
Stars like Gabriel Courchesne, William Leonard, Yorkton fixture Jye Zawatsky, and Gavin Bartha look to have all moved on, among others. Still, Olauson is a master at picking up, recruiting well, and moving on.
The best news for the Terriers is that two of the premium talents in the league are back: Tommy Ries, perhaps the best defenceman in the league — he probably was that last year too — and Callum Creig, who will look to move up the all-time goaltender wins list in Yorkton orange.
Brett Buckley had a terrific final on the blue line a year ago, as did super pest Austin Horbachewsky, so they will look to continue where they left off. Local boy DJ Brass was impressive as a playoff call-up a year ago after a dominant campaign in Saskatchewan U18 with Estevan, so watch for him to make a fast impact as well.
No matter how they start, you can bet they will compete hard as long as Ries is around to lead the way.
A new name to keep an eye on is young Mathys Morrissette, the dynamic younger brother of former Flin Flon Bomber and current French professional leaguer Chrys Collin.
