SJHL teams make moves as deadline approaches

REGINA, SK – There are only four days remaining until the Jan. 10 Canadian Junior Hockey League trade deadline, and teams have already been active since the Holiday freeze was thawed on New Year’s Day.

Teams can submit deals up until 5:00 P.M. Saskatchewan Time Saturday, and rosters must be down to a maximum of 25 carded players by then.

The largest in-league deal so far has come between Melville and La Ronge. The Mils acquired Ice Wolves’ captain and centreman Zane Normand in exchange for 2007-born defender Carter Turchak, 6-foot-3 forward Carter Wingert, who started the season in Melville but, as an ’08, has been playing U18AAA with his hometown Prince Albert Mintos, a pick and a player development fee.

Normand, 20, of Saskatoon, has played 97 games over three seasons with La Ronge and has amassed 41 points over that span while earning a reputation as one of the premium shutdown forwards in the league.

The Mils also dealt the CJHL rights to goaltender Ben Laurette to the Bonnyville Pontiacs (AJHL) for a player development fee, and in a corresponding move acquired 2006-net minder Massimo Urbani from the Richmond Sockeyes of the BC Junior B Pacific Junior Hockey League.

On Jan. 2, the Battlefords North Stars acquired behemoth right-shot 2006-born defenceman Alexander Coventry from the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in exchange for a Player Development Fee.

The Kindersley Klippers picked up 20-year-old forward Hunter Motley from the Olds Grizzlys of the AJHL, a 6-foot-1, 183-pounder who has played in 130 Junior A contests between Olds and the Whitecourt Wolverines.

Transactions will continue up until the deadline, so be sure to like, follow, and subscribe to all the SJHL social media platforms for details as they are made available.

Our Co-Directors of Media, Clark Munroe and Jamie Neugebauer, will have a whole trade deadline preview show on SJHL Insider on Thursday, a recap piece will be on the league website after the deadline, and they will break down all the moves on Monday, Jan. 12, on SJHL Weekly!
